Cardinals Shutout Susquehanna to Earn Second Win of Weekend

WASHINGTON, D.C – The Catholic University women's tennis team recorded its second win of the weekend with a 9-0 victory over Susquehanna on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals dominated on their home court and executed on all fronts to defeat the Landmark Conference opponent.

Jane Krukiel and Marissa Stambaugh opened the match with a 8-0 win in the No. 3 doubles match. Paige Brightwell and Meaghan Laniewski followed by taking No. 2 doubles 8-2.

Mairead O'Hara and Ava Niggemeier gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead heading into singles play with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles . As a whole, Catholic only allowed its opponent to win four games in doubles action.

The Cardinals never let up and continued to extend their lead throughout the match. Laniewski started fast in her No. 1 singles match and took the first set 6-1. She played equally well in the second set to win 6-3. After coming off victories at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles yesterday, the freshman ended the weekend with an impressive four wins in two days.

Krukiel was slated in the No. 2 singles spot and fought through a tough first set before confidently winning the second. The graduate student clinched the match with set scores of 6-4, 6-2.

O'Hara found herself stacked against strong competition at No. 3 singles. She took the first set 6-3 but her opponent would not go down as easily in the second. She landed crucial hits down the stretch and found a way to win the tight set 7-5.

Brightwell, Niggemeier, and Stambaugh dominated the rest of the singles field to complete the shutout for the Cardinals. Brightwell won 6-3, 6-1 while Niggemeier finished 6-2, 6-0 and Stambaugh went 6-1, 6-1.

Catholic will continue Landmark Conference play with a mid-week trip to Goucher on April 18. The contest will start at 3:30 pm in Baltimore, MD.
