Cardinals Win Eighth Match of the Season with Victory over Juniata

HUNTINGDON, PA - The Catholic University women's tennis team picked up its eighth win of the season with a 7-2 victory over Juniata on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals took a one-point lead into singles play and won their final five matches to top another Landmark Conference opponent.

The doubles pair of Mairead O'Hara and Ava Niggemeier started things off with a battle at the No. 1 spot. The duo forced a tiebreaker and was locked with their opponents at five points apiece before losing the final two points.

The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairs both won their matches comfortably. Paige Brightwell and Meaghan Laniewski took home an 8-4 victory while Jane Krukiel and Marissa Stambaugh secured an 8-3 win.

Laniewski continued her day with a three-set match at No. 2 singles. The freshman won the first set before her opponent made a comeback in the second. In the deciding set, Laniewski went up 5-1 and eventually closed out the match 6-3.

Similarly, O'Hara forced a three-set match at No. 3 singles. She dropped the first set, but was able to figure out her opponent from that point on and dominated the rest of the match. O'Hara's adjustments led to final scores of 3-6, 6-1, and 6-1.

Brightwell picked up her second victory of the day with two identical sets at No. 4 singles. She was down 5-6 in both sets before winning both tiebreaks 7-3.

Rounding out the singles matches, Niggemeier and Stambaugh successfully handled their opponents to secure the Conference victory. Niggermier shut out her opponent in the first set and finished with a 6-0, 6-2 win. Stambaugh won her match 8-1.

The Cardinals compete in their first home Landmark Conference contest of the spring season tomorrow against Susquehanna. The match is set to start at 1 p.m.
