WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — The Catholic University women's tennis team picked up a conference victory over Wilkes on Sunday afternoon, downing the Colonels 6-3.
A dominant win from Jane Krukiel and Marissa Stambaugh at No. 3 doubles set the tone for Catholic as the top Cardinal pair of Mairead O'Hara and Ava Niggemeier came through a battle at the top spot. Krukiel and Stambaugh came through against Zoe Klein and Cassidy Greenman, upsetting the Colonel duo for an important win.
Niggemeier and Stambaugh made it two wins from two at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Both players dropped their first two games but then rattled off 12 straight games to win comfortably, 6-2, 6-0. O'Hara also won her singles contest, 6-3, 6-2.
Meaghan Laniewski featured in the match of the day from Catholic's perspective. The freshman dropped the first set by a break but gathered herself well to battle back and take the second frame by a break. She then found the stamina to outlast her challenger in an extended third set, getting a late break to come through 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The win sees Nate Farlow's squad get back to winning ways and move to 2-1 in Landmark Conference play after yesterday's defeat at Scranton.Â
Catholic will now turn its attention to a midweek battle with Goucher on Wednesday afternoon. The away contest marks the seventh-consecutive match that the Cardinals will play away from home before they finally return to home on Saturday.
