Cards Win 10th Match of Campaign, Remain Unbeaten in Conference Play

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — The Catholic University men's tennis team remained perfect in Landmark Conference play with a convincing win over Wilkes on Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals came through the doubles competition with a 2-1 advantage thanks to wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Catholic's top duo of James Earwood and Diego Romo triumphed in a very tight match that went all the way to a tiebreak (8-7(4)) while Tycho Janssen and Ben Perks made quicker work of their challengers, downing the Colonel pair, 8-3.

Earwood and Romo utilized similar routes to second wins on the day on the singles courts.

Romo needed a tiebreak in the first set before breezing to the win at love in the second frame (7-6(4), 6-0) while Earwood came through a tight tiebreak prior to a more comfortable second set (7-6(5), 6-2).

Janssen was locked in battle at the top singles position that went the full length of three sets. The graduate student claimed the first set courtesy of a convincing tiebreak win before Angelo Guzman of Wilkes came back to take the second frame. The two battled in the third but ultimately Janssen pulled out the victory after securing a late break (7-6(0), 2-6, 6-4).

Perks and Charlie Robbins took home wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles with identical scores, only dropping one game each (6-0, 6-1).

The win marks Catholic's fourth in a row and 10th overall, moving the Cardinals to 10-4. Nate Farlow's team also sits at an impressive 3-0 in conference play.

The Cardinals will complete a seven-match road trip on Wednesday when they battle the Gophers of Goucher at 3:30 p.m. before finally returning to the Dowd Family Tennis Courts on Saturday for a bout with Moravian.
