SCRANTON, Pa. — The Catholic University men's tennis team won its third-straight match as it defeated Scranton on Saturday afternoon.
The 8-1 victory was fueled by clutch Cardinal performances as two of the wins came in decisive tiebreaks, meaning the match was much closer than the final score reflects. Nate Farlow's doubles teams came through with a sweep of the Royals to give Catholic a massive boost.
The duos of James Earwood and Diego Romo at No. 1 doubles and Henry Ogden and Charlie Robbins at No. 3 doubles had  eerily similar paths to victory. Both Cardinal duos found themselves down 6-7 before forcing tiebreaks that they both won, 7-2. Ogden and Robbins needed to break their challenges' serve to even the match at 7-7 and complete the fight back.
Tycho Janssen and Ben Perks showed great resilience to join their doubles teammates in victory. The No. 2 doubles duo was down 1-4 before catching lightning in a bottle and rattling off seven-straight games to win the match, 8-4.
Janssen made it two wins from two on the day as he pulled out a victory at the top singles position. The graduated student won the first set in an extended tiebreak before rolling in the second frame to win in straight sets (7-6(7), 6-0).
Earwood, Romo, Ogden and Robbins all picked up solo wins to ensure that Catholic moved to 2-0 in Landmark Conference play. The Cardinals are now 9-4 overall this season.
Catholic will face a quick turnaround as the squad will play another match less in less than 24 hours. Farlow's squad will travel to Wilkes-Barre to battle Wilkes in another conference match, with opening service set for 1 p.m.
