SCRANTON, Pa. — The Catholic University women's tennis team dropped a tight conference contest to Scranton on Saturday afternoon.
Mairead O'Hara picked up a nice win at No. 4 singles, coming through by a break in the first set before flying to a smooth win the second frame (6-4, 6-1).
Ava Niggemeier took the first set of her match at No. 5 singles by a double break before securing the win in the second by one break (6-2, 6-4). Marissa Stambaugh secured the final Catholic win at the No. 6 singles position, coming through in a battle. She triumphed in a tiebreak at the first set before pulling away in a comfortable second frame (7-6(4), 6-1).
Meaghan Laniewski fell just short in a massive battle at No. 2 singles. She split the first two sets with her opponent before beginning in a hole in the decisive tiebreak. The freshman trailed 6-8 and battled back to 8-9 but could not fend off the match point.
She was also involved in an intense battle at No. 2 doubles. Laniewski combined with Paige Brightwell to fall by a single break, 6-8.Â
Catholic will remain in the state of Pennsylvania and face a quick turnaround for another Landmark Conference contest. Nate Farlow's squad will meet Wilkes at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
