HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Catholic men's tennis wrapped up a four-game spring trip to Hilton Head on Friday afternoon with a 7-2 victory over Webster. The Cardinals improved to 8-4 on the season as they will turn their full attention to Landmark Conference play.
Nate Farlow's program was utterly dominant in singles play, winning all six matches to overcome an early 2-1 deficit after doubles. The Cardinals needed a tie-breaking third set at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but both
James Earwood and
Diego Romo prevailed to spark Catholic's dominance.
Earwood and Romo also got the job done at No. 1 singles, defeating Matthew Bicrchmeier and Carson Fisher 8-6 in an extremely competitive match. The pairs exchanged service holds the entire set when the Catholic duo earned the first break of the match to come away victorious.
Earwood started fast, hit a lull, and then responded in a big way at No. 1 singles as he jumped ahead 3-0 before dropping the first set 6-3. He edged out a 7-5 second set victory before dominating the tiebreak, 10-3. On the inverse of Earwood's situation, Romo got off to a quick start, beating Birchmeier 6-1 in the first before a punch back from Webster's No. 2. Romo battled to a 10-8 victory in the tiebreaker.
Allan Van Nostrand and
Henry Ogden both got the job done at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, earning the match victory for Catholic. Van Nostrand won 6-1, 6-4 while Ogden won it 6-3, 6-4.
Charles Robbins and
Drew Andrianopoulos were dominant at No. 5 and No.6 singles, each winning 6-2, 6-0 to finish off the singles sweep.
Catholic is back in action on Saturday, March 23 versus Scranton.
