HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Catholic University women's tennis team dropped a closely-contested match to Dickinson this afternoon, falling to the Red Devils, 5-4.
Mairead O'Hara and Ava Niggemeier produced the comeback of the season at No. 1 doubles, overcoming a 1-6 deficit to triumph in a tiebreak. The freshman pair rallied off two breaks to knot the match at 7-7 and continued their new-found momentum to win the tiebreak comfortably, only dropping a single point in the decisive breaker.
Jane Krukiel and Marissa Stambaugh also came through in a tiebreak at No. 3 singles. That duo produced a mini comeback, fending off a 6-7 deficit to force the tiebreak in which they triumphed, 7-4.
Niggemeier had a full day, going the distance on the singles court as well. Competing at No. 5, she split the first two sets before battling in a marathon breaker. The freshman fended off three match points to level the tiebreaker at 9-9 and eventually win it at 13-11 (6-3, 2-6, 13-11). Stambaugh also won both of her matches on the day, coming through 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Paige Brightwell fell in a tight battle at No. 3 singles. She cruised comfortably in the first set before dropping the second frame by a break before falling in a tiebreak.
Nate Farlow's team will continue its time in Hilton Head with an early-afternoon battle against Shepherd. The Cardinals will take on the Rams at 1 p.m. at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Center.
