Offensive Explosion Pushes Catholic To Doubleheader Split

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Catholic picked up a doubleheader split on day two of the Ripken Experience, defeating Albertus Magnus while dropping game one to McDaniel. 

Game 1 - McDaniel 15, Catholic 7


Catholic took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning on Sunday afternoon, but the Green Terror of McDaniel used a seven-run inning to take the lead in a 15-7 victory. 

Mitchel Johnson, Chase Falcon, and Steve Thomas all had multi-hit days at the plate while Dante Pozzi drew four walks for the Cardinals in the losing effort. 

Johnson, Zach Burton, Lance Eilbacher, and Michael Mugno each hit a double for the Cardinals.

Trailing 4-0, Catholic pushed four across the board in the top of the third to tie the contest. Pozzi and Burton walked to open the inning. After McDaniel starter Jake Young retired Johnson, the Green Terror went to the bullpen, bringing in Ryan Martino. 

Facing Martino, Thomas singled up the middle, loading the bases for Logan Eilbacher. Eilbacher hit a grounder to short, but an errant throw allowed him to reach while Pozzi and Burton scored. With two outs, Falcon reached on an error as Thomas scored to make it 4-3. Finally, Eilbacher tied the game at 4-4 as he scored on a failed pickoff attempt. 

The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the fourth inning as Johnson drove in Pozzi with an RBI single to left. 

McDaniel scored seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to retake the lead and build an 11-5 advantage. The Green Terror tacked on two more in the sixth and seventh to reach their final total of 15. 

Catholic scored two more runs in the fifth as Lance Eilbacher doubled and came around to score and Falcon scored after a single as well. 


Game 2 - Catholic 19, Albertus Magnus 4

The Catholic bats exploded in game two, tallying 19 hits as they scored a season-high 19 runs in a 19-4 victory over Albertus Magnus. 

The Cardinals hit four bombs as Johnson, Jack Elwell, Sammy Burman, and Michael Napolitano all went yard in the victory. Napolitano also added a double while Justin McCarthy, Thomas, and Jesse Lacefield all had extra-base hits in the contest. 

Eddie Kaftan went 5.0 inning to earn the win, allowing four runs and striking out six. Freshman Luke Cardman was outstanding in relief, striking out three in 3.0 scoreless innings. Ryan O'Keefe struck out two in a scoreless innings to cap another impressive performance from the Catholic bullpen. 

Albertus Magnus struck first against Kaftan, plating three runs in the first and one in the second, but Kaftan threw three straight scoreless innings before giving way to Cardman. Catholic held its opponent scoreless for the final seven innings. 

Burman started the scoring for Catholic in the top of the second, blasting a two-run homer to right after a Johnson walk to start off the frame. 

Trailing 4-2 in the top of the third, Pozzi started off a five-run frame with a walk. Joe Marini drew a one-out walk before Thomas grounded out. With two runners on and two outs, Catholic started a two-out rally as Johnson went yard to put the Cardinals ahead 5-4. Burman kept the party going, following the homer with a single to right. Napolitano singled to give way for Lacefield who brought in two runs with a triple to right field, giving Catholic a 7-4 lead. 

After a scoreless fourth, Catholic pushed the lead to 8-4 in the top of the fifth. Thomas singled to center and stole second before Johnson added another RBI to his total with a single to left, bringing Thomas around. 

A three-run seventh inning pushed the Cardinal lead to eight runs as Burman followed a Thomas triple with an RBI single. Napolitano smacked a two-run shot to make it 12-4. 

Catholic tacked on seven more runs in the ninth inning, getting a home run from Elwell, an RBI double from Napolitano, a two-run double from McCarthy, an RBI single from Sean O'Mara, and an RBI single from Daniel Nellum

Johnson (4), Burman (3), Napolitano (3), Lacefield (2), and McCarthy (2) all recorded multi-RBI games for the Cardinals.

Catholic is scheduled for an off day tomorrow before returning to action versus New England College on Tuesday.
