Catholic Defeats New England College, Improves to 7-3

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Catholic Cardinals improved to 7-3 on the season with a 7-1 victory over New England College on Tuesday afternoon at the Ripken Experience.

Catholic started off strong, manufacturing a run on three hits in the opening frame against New England College. Zach Burton singled and moved to third on a Joe Marini single before Steve Thomas drove in Burton with an RBI double to right.

The Cardinals scored two more in the third, taking a 3-0 lead with a couple of key two-out hits. After Burton and Marini were retired to start the inning, Thomas singled, stole two bases, and then scored on an RBI single off the bat of Sammy Burman. Michael Napolitano made it 3-0 with an RBI single to score Mitchel Johnson who drew a walk earlier in the inning.

Johnson pushed the fourth run across the board with a solo shot in the top of the fifth inning, his second big fly of the season. NEC got one back against reliever Danny Prior as Tyler Fenton ripped an RBI triple to right center, cutting the deficit back to three runs.

The final runs of the contest came in the sixth inning as Catholic added three more before Prior closed out a 7-1 victory.

Jesse Lacefield single to open the frame, followed by a one-out walk issued to freshman Matt Perlin. The pair double stole, to put two runners in scoring position for Burton. Burton doubled down the right field line to make it 6-1 before Marini drove in Burton with an RBI single to put the final run on the board.

Sam Fairhurst pitched well in his first career start, striking out three and scattering three hits in 4.0 scoreless frames. Prior gets the win in relief, allowing just one run in 5.0 frames out of the bullpen.

Burton and Thomas had three hits each and combined to drive in three of Catholic's seven runs while Marini also had a multi-hit day and drove in a run. Burton surpassed the 100-career hit milestone with his three knocks.

Catholic will finish off its Spring Break trip tomorrow at 9 a.m against Coast Guard.
