THE SKINNY
- The Catholic University women's basketball team downed Susquehanna on Thursday, 83-70, to advance to the Landmark Conference Championship game on Saturday. Anna Scoblick continued her monster season, securing a double-double in the first half. She entered the locker room with 16 points and 10 rebounds, adding eight points in the second half to finish with a career-high 24. It's the sophomore's fifth double-double of the year. Carly Mulvaney also had a big game for the Cardinals, dropping 19 points while grabbing three rebounds, forcing three steals and handing out three assists. Keegan Douglas and Kerry Flaherty each contributed with 11 points while Sarah White pitched in with nine points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals.
- The No. 2 seed University of Scranton women's basketball team (24-2) closed the game on an 11-1 run over the final 2:54 and outlasted the No. 3 seed Elizabethtown Blue Jays (19-8) by a 51-42 score in Landmark Conference semifinal action on Thursday at the John Long Center in Scranton.
- No. 10 Catholic enters Saturday's championship with 25 wins, the second most in program history, only behind the 27-2 team from 2012-13. Catholic is hot off an 83-70 victory over Susquehanna in the Landmark Conference Semifinal, sending the Cardinals to the Landmark Championship for the ninth time in program history.
- The Cardinals are chasing their fourth-ever Landmark Conference Title and first since 2014-15 when they defeated Scranton 52-51 to claim the crown. Catholic is 9-4 all time in conference tournament semifinal games.
- Numerous players have stepped up into increased role this season to help Catholic reach new heights. Junior.Douglas averages 13.8 points per game to lead the Cardinals, nearly doubling her output from last season (7.2).
- Three of Catholic's top four scorers from last season were lost to graduation but the Cardinals have overcome that to take a step forward on offense this season. All five starters average 9.3 points per game or more. Graduate transfer Flaherty has been a welcome addition, posing a constant threat from deep. She has knocked down a team-high 53 triples this season, converting at a 35.8 percent clip from deep while averaging 9.7 points per game.
- Mulvaney is the top scorer back from last season but her output has also increased. The junior averages 10.9 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game, both up from last season. She has also come up with 45 steals.
- Scoblick has been immense for the Cardinals, offering a dominant presence in the paint on both ends of the floor. The sophomore leads Catholic in offensive rebounding, total rebounding and blocks (31) while sitting second in assists (68) and third in steals (36). She is also second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.3 points per game.
- White has really come into her own as the primary ball handler for the Cardinals this season. She leads the team in assists (84) and rebounds her position extremely well as the third-leading rebounder on the team. She is always a threat to get hot from deep and currently ranks fifth in Catholic history in steals in a single season with an impressive 80.
- Catholic's success has largely been driven by depth. The Cardinals go 10-to-12 deep depending on any given night and see very little drop off in quality when substitutes enter the game. Alexa Kenah, Tori Fernandez and Kaleigh Beirne are just some of the key contributors that come off of the bench for the Cardinals.
- Head Coach Matt Donohue, who earned his 400th career win earlier this season, has praised this Catholic team for its unselfish play. Catholic has four players that rank in the top 15 in the conference in assists per game.
- As the defense goes, so does Catholic. The Cardinals have allowed 60 or fewer points in 20 of their 26 games this season and rank in the top 20 nationally in field goal percentage defense (32.6%), three point percentage defense (23.6%) and scoring margin (21.8)
THE MATCHUP
- The Cardinals and the Royals split the regular-season matchups with each team winning their home games. Catholic defeated Scranton 89-86 in OT in one of the most exciting games in recent memory before the Royals got payback on the Cardinals with a 56-51 win at the John Long Center. Douglas scored 29 points, including the game-tying three-pointer with less than three seconds left on the regulation clock. Mulvaney took over in the extra period to help Catholic clinch the victory. Kaeli Romanowski scored 38 for the Royls while Kaci Kranson added 21 points and 12 rebounds.
- In the rematch in Scranton, Pa., Kranson (11 & 12) and Maddy Ryan (12 & 14) contributed double-doubles as Scranton pulled out a five-point win in a defensive battle. Douglas and Mulvaney combined for 25 of the team's 51.
- The Royals have taken 8 of the last 10 meetings over the Cardinals. Seven of the last 10 Landmark Championships have featured the Cardinals and the Royals with Scranton holding a 5-2 edge in those contests.
