WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Steven Dezelic and
Victor Rosado each recorded hat tricks as Catholic men's lacrosse dropped a heart breaker to Messiah in overtime on Saturday evening at Carlini Field. The Falcons scored 43 seconds into the extra period to come away with an 11-10 victory over the Cardinals.
First year head coach
Peter Donley's squad took a 10-8 lead on
Cullen Lotz's second goal of the contest with 9:51 left in regulation. Messiah pulled within one at the 8:37 mark as Owen Hammel put home an unassisted goal. Catholic held steady for more than seven minutes, but Mike McKnelly's third goal of the contest tied things up with 1:36 remaining. Neither team could put a goal home before the regulation buzzer. Messiah won the opening draw and long stick Tristan Lynch went for the win, but bounced it over the net. However, McKnelly was able to get a clean look and score his fourth of the day to win it for the Falcons.
After taking a 1-0 lead just 1:11 into the contest as
Victor Rosado beat the keeper, the Cardinals took a little to settle back in, falling behind 5-1 early in the second quarter. Catholic scored three straight to end the half, pulling within a goal as
Fitz McLaughlin,
Brady McMahon, and Lotz each got on the board for Catholic.
The Cardinals tied it at 5-5 with 11:18 remaining in the third quarter as McLaughlin found Dezelic for a man-up goal. After Bobby Berg gave the lead back to Messiah, Dezelic scored back-to-back goals to give Catholic the lead with 3:28 left on the third quarter clock. Rosado pushed the lead to 9-7 with 11:45 left with his third of the contest.
Rosado led the offensive effort with five points, adding two assists to go with his three goals. Rosado went over 40 goals for his career and reached the 40 assist plateau as well.
Ryan Macksoud had a strong day, winning 15-22 face-offs and leading the team with nine ground balls.
Mike Tayloe had five ground balls for the Cardinals and also caused a turnover.
John Hadden and
Jack Dwyer each racked up four ground balls each.
Tyler Merchant played 43:31 of relief in goal and made three saves for Catholic.
The Cardinals will host Stevenson on February 28 at 7 p.m. on Carlini Field.
