WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Catholic men's basketball completed the regular season on Saturday with an 80-57 road victory at Lycoming.
Jesse Hafemeister scored 32 points to lead the Cardinals as they finished the campaign with a record of 22-3 and will be the number one seed in next week's Landmark Conference Tournament.
The Cardinal lead was just six points with 14:01 remaining, but a 17-0 spurt pushed Catholic's advantage to 63-40 with 8:17 left in the contest.
Sean Neylon and
Brian Herbert both knocked down threes during the run, putting
Aaron Kelly's team ahead by a score of 57-40.
Ethan Hinds scored after a
Dan Buckley offensive rebound to give Catholic its largest lead of the game at 74-47 with 2:35 to play before the Cardinals closed out a 23-point win.
Lycoming got off to a hot start, taking a 21-14 lead with 8:38 left in the first half before Catholic ended the half on a 20-6 run, taking a 34-27 edge into the locker room after an and-one from
Enzo Sechi with less than two minutes remaining.
Hafemeister led the way with his ninth straight outing in double figures. He has scored 23 or more in three straight games and notched his second 30-plus point effort of the 2023-2024 season. Hafemeister went over 1,400 career points with his outing, pushing his season scoring average to 17.6. Herbert was the only other Cardinal in double figures with 11 points, just missing a double-double as he pulled in nine rebounds. Sechi also was just short of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds while Buckley led the team with 10 rebounds and six assists.
The outright regular season champions of the Landmark Conference, the Cardinals will turn their attention to Tuesday's quarterfinal between Wilkes and Juniata to see who will come to Washington, D.C. on Thursday for the Landmark Conference Semifinals. The contest will be a RED OUT.
