Hot-Shooting Rangers End Cardinal Win Streak

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic men's basketball saw its 14-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon as the red-hot shooting Drew Rangers pulled out a 96-81 victory on Franny Murray Court. Prior to Saturday's contest, eight members of the Catholic men's basketball program were honored on Senior Day.

Jesse Hafemeister scored 24 points and grabbed four rebounds while Tommy Kelly chipped in with 18 points, but the Cardinals could not overcome 19 Drew three-pointers.

Drew led for the majority of the contest, building a 14-point advantage in the first eight minutes of action. Catholic trailed by as many as 17 in the first half as Papie Roberts drilled a three to put the Rangers ahead 36-19 with 8:04 left in the half. The Cardinals trimmed the deficit down to 10 after a Hafemeister layup with 4:00 to play in the first half and a late pair of free throws from Brian Herbert sent Catholic into the locker room down by 12.

Dan Buckley pulled Catholic within single digits with 15:35 left on the clock as he knocked down two free throws, but the Cardinals would trail by 10 or more for the rest of the contest as Drew continued to make big shots throughout the contest.

Roberts and Pat Higgins combined for 47 points and nine three pointers made for the Rangers while David Musial hit five of the Rangers' 19 threes.

The Cardinals also received double digit scoring efforts from Herbert (14) and Enzo Sechi (10). Catholic shot 24-26 from the free throw line in the defeat. Catholic still holds a two-game lead in the Landmark Conference with two contests remaining while Drew now sits in third place, just one game out of a top-two seed.

Catholic will play its final regular season home contest of the season on Wednesday as the Goucher Gophers come to town.
