Herbert's Big Afternoon Leads Cardinals to Victory over Saints

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Meeting for the second time in the young season, Catholic (8-2) defeated Marymount (6-5) by a final score of 68-50 in the consolation game of the Tom McKavitt Classic. Brian Hebert scored a career-high 25 points on 9-11 shooting in the victory for the Cardinals who rebounded from a loss to Rowan yesterday.

Catholic took the lead 24 seconds into the contest and never trailed, turning a six-point halftime advantage into an 18-point victory. The Cardinals led by as many as 20 in the winning effort.

Jamie Ntiamoah followed up a career performance in yesterday's game with 14 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and three assists while CJ Ruoff chipped in with 12 points off the bench. Catholic shot an impressive 56.5 percent from the field in the contest, including a mark of 59.1 percent in the second half. The Cardinals dominated the contest in the post, scoring 44 points in the paint to Marymount's 20.

Leading 32-26 just over 90 seconds into the second half, Herbert and Ntiamoah scored to quickly push the lead to 10. At the 13:56 mark, a three from Herbert gave Catholic a 14-point advantage at 42-28. With 11:07 remaining, Ruoff drained a triple, pushing the lead up to 18. Marymount would never trim the deficit smaller than 13 with the lead growing to 20 at the 3:16 mark with Ntiamoah knocking down a pair of free throws.

This was the second meeting of the season between the local rivals with Catholic defeating Marymount on November 26th, 72-69. Starters Isaac Harris and Jase Mosley combined for 15 points in the first outing, but were unavailable for this afternoon's meeting.

QUICK HITTERS
  • With 25 points today, Herbert surpassed the career-high in scoring that he set in the first matchup. Hebert scored 19 in the win at Marymount before following it up with 19 more in a home win over Susquehanna. The junior had gone back-to-back games with less than 10 points before today's outburst. With 25 points today, Herbert raised his scoring average to 14.9 points per game, nearly six more points per contest than last season.
  • With 14 points today, Ntiamoah has now scored in double digits in three consecutive contests. He averages 11.1 points per game and has scored 14 or more four times this season after never reaching that mark in the first 42 games of his career.
  • 56.5 percent is the second-best shooting mark of the season for Catholic and the seventh time this year they have shot 50 percent or better from the floor. Ntiamoah, Sean Neylon, and Herbert are all shooting 53 percent or better from the floor.
  • Catholic has won four straight against the Saints with its last loss to Marymount coming back on December 1, 2021.
Catholic will return to action after the holiday, making the trip down to Fredericksburg, Va. to take on Mary Washington on January 4.
