WASHINGTON, D.C. - Despite taking a lead in the 63rd minute, Catholic (4-4-2) women's soccer couldn't hold off the defending Landmark Champions as Scranton (8-1-2) picked up a 3-1 victory at Carlini Field.
Isabel Doherty's second goal of the campaign and sixth of her career gave the Cardinals the advantage just over 17 minutes into the second half. However, Scranton would score just over three minutes later to tie the contest before taking the lead in the 72nd.
In the 66th minute,
Kaitlyn Houri's clearance ricocheted off the body of Niamh Healy and took a Scranton bounce to a waiting Jenna Borelli who beat
Ava Rieger for her third goal of the season.
Rieger would ultimately finish the game with an impressive seven saves as Scranton held the shot advantage 20-6, but Molly Martys would beat Rieger in the 72nd minute to put the Royals on top for good. After a Rieger save, the ball deflected back out to Faith Schechter who left it off for Martys who put away her first goal of the season. In the 84th minute, an own goal would prove to be the nail in the coffin for the Cardinals.
All of
Alex Berish, Houri, and
Teighan Boyle gave Catholic the full 90 today while
Payton Hardy played 86 minutes.
Peyton Coron returned to the starting lineup and played her most minutes of the season with 70.
Catholic continues to push on through Landmark Conference play on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. versus Susquehanna.
