WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic men's soccer team celebrated its 14 man senior class on Saturday afternoon while taking on Wilkes in its second to last conference match of the season. After several chances in the first half went by the wayside, the Cardinals found their stride in the second half, putting four goals in the back of the net to come away with a convincing 5-0 win over the Colonials.
Despite dominating in the shot total 19-0, the Cardinals were unable to get an advantage in the first half. Wilkes goaltender Matthew Conti made six saves in the half to prevent Catholic from taking the lead.
It did not take long into the second half for Catholic to finally break through and take the lead 1-0.
Ben Zimmer got into the game for the first time and delivered a perfect cross out in front of goal and
Andrew Lowman was in the perfect spot to send a header past the keeper in the 51st minute to give the Cardinals a lead they would not squander. 12 minutes later, after corner was cleared
Domenico Caltabiano rolled a pass into the penalty area and
Holden Woodings fought around a defender and from the left side of goal beat the keeper to double the Cardinals lead.
Woodings has been the go to man for goals this season and he left his mark on this game as well putting away his second goal of the match on an assist from
Michael Hanlon to move to a 3-0 lead.
One final senior made an impact in the final minutes of the match when
Hayden Lim put away his second goal of the season to put a bookmark on an emphatic 4-0 win. It was the second match of the season where the Cardinals have scored four goals which is a season high. The Cardinals sit in second place in the conference after the win with a 8-5-3 record and 5-0-3 Landmark play.
Woodings continues to lead the conference in goals with his season total now sitting at 12. He is now tied for seventh all-time for goals in a single season in program history since the program transferred to Division III. It was Woodings' second multi-goal match of the season and he now has nine goals in conference contests.
Caltabiano's assist was the 20th of his career, which is the most in program history as a D3 team. It was his second of the season and he also now has 53 career points.
Lowman's goal was the third of his career and he has now scored in three straight seasons. Lim's goal made him the fourth player to score multiple goals this season for Catholic.
Owen Allegro and
James Pickeral combined for the seventh clean sheet of the season for the team. The Catholic defense held Wilkes to just two shots in the game and the Cardinals out shot the Colonials 33-2 in the match.
The Cardinals are back in action this upcoming Tuesday, October 29 when they welcome in Washington College for the last non-conference matchup of the season. Kickoff will start at Carlini Field at 7 pm on Tuesday.
