Thrilling Second Half Leads Catholic to Draw With Washington College

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — The Catholic men's soccer team fit in one last non-conference game before the end of the regular season Tuesday night, welcoming in Washington College to Carlini Field. After a stalemate in the first half, the teams traded blows back-and-forth in the second half with both teams having a lead at different points to play to a 3-3 draw.

After a first half that only registered five shots between the two teams, it did not take long into the second for Catholic to find the first breakthrough in the match. Holden Woodings played a pass to an overlapping Ben Zimmer who went streaking in on goal behind the Shoremen defense and beat the keeper to his near post to put the Cardinals on top, 1-0.

Momentum shifted quickly just three minutes later when Katim Njie got tangled up inside the 18-yard box with Catholic's Owen Maher which drew a penalty call from the head official. Washington College called on Sebastien Linares to take the penalty and he smashed it past a diving keeper to pull the match back even.

The crazy sequence to start the half continued just two minutes later when the ball ended up back at the feet of Woodings. Woodings took the ball from the right flank and dribbled around multiple defenders until he found himself on the goal-line to the right of goal and the junior forward steered a shot from the wide angle onto goal that was deflected in by Washington College for the Cardinals' second goal of the half to regain the lead.

After Catholic held onto the lead for 16 minutes, Jordan Waiganjo and Francesco Bertolini took the match over to put the Shoremen on top for the first time on the night, 3-2. Francesco assisted both goals scored by Waiganjo with Yasir German also adding an assist on the second goal. Both of the goals came within two minutes of each other to give Washington College the advantage.

Woodings was not going down without a fight for the Cardinals as he tucked away his second goal of the night to tie things back up at three. The play started when Corey Magro played a cross out in front of goal that was not properly cleared by the Washington College defense and Woodings came streaking in to tuck it away for his second consecutive multi-goal game.

The scoring finally came to a halt in the half after the goal and the match ended in a 3-3 draw to move the Cardinals record to 8-5-4 on the season. Catholic ran its unbeaten streak to 10 matches which is the program's longest such streak since 2019.

Woodings has now scored four goals in the last two matches to bring his season goal total to 14. 14 goals is tied for the fourth-most in a single-season in program history, since the program moved to D3, with Matt Brady who also scored 14 in 2008. Woodings also now has 29 points on the season which is tied for the fifth-most in a single season in the program's D3 history.

Zimmer's goal was the second on the season for him, making him the fifth player on the team this season to reach multiple goals. Zimmer now has four goals in his career with the Cardinals.

The regular season wraps up for Catholic this upcoming Saturday, November 2 for a match with the top seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference tournament, Juniata. The Cardinals can secure the second seed and a first round bye in the tournament with a win over the Eagles. Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm at Carlini Field.
