WASHINGTON, D.C. — After going nearly a full calendar month without having a home match, the Catholic men's soccer returned back to Carlini Field looking to get back into the win column against the Saints of Marymount, who came in unbeaten in their last seven matches. The Cardinals dominated play from the beginning and after snagging a late first half goal, they continued to play good attacking soccer to help secure a 3-0 win to move to 3-5-1 on the season.
Catholic created many solid chances in the opening 20 minutes of the contest with Domenico Caltabiano and Andrew Lowman just narrowly missing scoring chances over the crossbar. With just 1:41 remaining in the half Liam Giblin delivered in a cross from the right side of the 18 to Hayden Lim, who had plenty of time to settle and tuck a shot into the bottom left corner passed the dive of the keeper to put the Cards up, 1-0.
The Cardinals created another great scoring opportunity for Ryan Kelly in the final minute, but the shot sailed about the bar to keep the same score. Catholic out-shot Marymount 6-1 in the first half without even allowing a shot on target.
Lim was not done making an impact on the match, stepping up to the corner spot just seven minutes into the second half. Lim's cross was right in front of goal when Maximilian Penczar was waiting and the defender steered the cross into the back of the net to double the Catholic lead.
Catholic continued to dictate the pace of play throughout the second half and were able to find a third and decisive goal to put the Saints away. On a beautifully delivered ball in from Ryan Kelly, Ben Zimmer found himself all alone in front of goal and rifled a shot into the top of the net for good measure to put the final blow into a 3-0 win for the Cardinals. It was Catholic's first victory since its last home match and the second largest margin of victory for the team this season.
All three of the Cardinal goal scorers scored their first goal of the season, Penczar's coming on his first shot of the campaign. Lim's goal was the first of his career with the Cardinals and he became the first player to record a goal and an assist in the same match this year. His assist also brought his season total to four which leads the team. Catholic now has nine different goal scorers on the season.
Owen Allegro and James Pickeral combined for the second shutout of the season for the Cardinals. The two of them each made a save in the win. The Cardinals out-shot the Saints 14-6 and only allowed two shots on target throughout the match. Catholic has now outscored its opponents 7-0 in its last two home matches.
The Cardinals dive back into conference play this upcoming weekend when they welcome in Scranton on what is Family Weekend at Catholic University. The Royals come to Carlini 4-2-3 (1-0 LC) and kickoff is set for 3:30 pm.
