Late Caltabiano Goal Earns Catholic a Draw

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic men's soccer team played in its home conference game of the season, welcoming in Scranton for a Saturday afternoon contest. It was a tight battle throughout as both teams were able to crack the scoreboard in the late minutes in the second half to come away with a 1-1 draw. The Cardinals moved to 3-5-2 and 0-0-2 in Landmark play with the result.

After 77 minutes of a very evenly played match, the Royals finally seized an opportunity to take the lead late in the match on their fourth shot on goal of the game. Ciaran Corr set up his teammate Logan Campbell and Campbell found the back of the net to make life difficult for the Cardinals. It was the first goal for Campbell of the season.

Catholic's fortunes changed very soon after the goal when the Cardinals drew a foul inside of the box for a penalty kick for an opportunity to pull even. The Cardinals called on the veteran midfielder Domenico Caltabiano to step up to the spot and Caltabiano slotted one home to pull the match back even. It was the second time Caltabiano has converted from the penalty spot this season in just as many chances.
Neither team were able to find a decisive goal in the final 10 minutes of the and it ended in a draw after the 90 minutes.

Scranton held a slight advantage in shots in the game with an 11-10 edge but both teams wound up putting four shots on target. Both goalies, Owen Allegro and Charlie Smith, finished with three saves in the contest as well.

For Caltabiano, the goal was his second of the season and 18th of his career with the Cards. His 18 goals tie him for ninth all-time in program history with Brian Pappas (2006-09). He also ranks ninth in career points with 54, including four so far this season.

The Cardinals continue a long streak of conference play this upcoming week when they take on Susquehanna on the road. The Cardinals will look to pick up their first conference win of the season on Wednesday, October 9 against the Riverhawks with kickoff coming at 7 pm.
