Bond Converts Two Penalty Strokes, Catholic Falls to Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Oli Bond found the back of the cage twice in Catholic field hockey's non-conference contest against Mary Washington on Wednesday evening, but the Eagles scored four in the fourth quarter to snag the victory.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Cardinals earned a prime opportunity in the second quarter when the Eagles committed a foul in the circle. Bond stepped up to take the penalty stroke with eight minutes left in the half and converted to give Catholic a 1-0 lead.

The third quarter saw back-and-forth action between both sides with Catholic recording two shots on goal and Mary Washington firing three, but each goalkeeper made multiple saves to keep the Catholic advantage at one.

The scoring broke open in the fourth quarter. 53 seconds into the final frame, the Eagles found their first goal of the contest to tie the game at one apiece. The Cardinals responded by charging down the field and earning a penalty corner, but the Eagles disrupted the offensive threat to keep things even. Six minutes later, Mary Washington found the go-ahead goal, and added two more to its total over the next five minutes to take a three goal lead with less than three minutes left to play.

Catholic cut the average by one with another penalty stroke goal by Bond, but the clock expired before the Cardinals had another chance. Bond now leads the team with five goals and 11 points during her rookie season.

The Cardinals remain on the road for their next contest on Saturday, October 5 when they travel to take on Scranton. The Landmark Conference match-up is set to start at noon.
