WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic men's soccer team looked to make it three straight wins on the season at Carlini Field Wednesday night as they welcomed in Elizabethtown for another Landmark Conference clash. Despite being dominant in possession and shot attempts, the Cardinals were unable to break the deadlock in the second half after finding an equalizer and wound up drawing 1-1 with the Blue Jays to move to 5-5-3 (2-0-3 LC).
The Cardinals seized control in the opening minutes in the first half and created some great chances that just did not find the back of the net. Within 40 seconds of each other,
Holden Woodings with the woodwork twice, once off the crossbar and once off the left upright. Pedro Miranda then stepped up with two big saves to keep the score tied on shots from
Domenico Caltabiano and
Mudi Jagha. On Jagha's shot, Miranda went into full extension above his head to deflect the shot off the crossbar and the ball came inches away from going over the goal line, but was just shy of giving Catholic the lead.
Elizabethtown settled into the game over the next several minutes and found the back of the net on one of its few shots on target in the contest. Gavin Domsohn started the move by getting around a Catholic defender and whipping a pass into the penalty area to Pedro Vinent. Vinent calmly found his teammate AJ Sasso to his right, who was set up for a one-on-one chance with the keeper and tucked it away for the game's opening goal. It was Sasso's second goal of the year.
Neither team conceded another goal in the first half and the score went into the halftime break at 1-0 in favor of the Blue Jays.
10 minutes into the second half, Catholic turned to its most reliable goal scorer in Woodings to find an equalizer. It was a beautiful one-two pass setup by Woodings and
Ryan Kelly that put Woodings through right in front of goal with a chance. Woodings fought through a diving Miranda and rippled the back of the net to pull the Cardinals back even at 1-1.
The Cardinals created several other good opportunities to take the lead in the second half but were unable to find the last piece of end product and the match finished as a 1-1 draw. The result extends Catholic's unbeaten run to six matches and they are 3-0-3 in those matches.
It was a sizable advantage for the Cardinals in the shot department, out-shooting the Blue Jays 22-3 during the night. They also held a plus margin in shots on goals, 9-3. However, Miranda was the difference for Elizabethtown making eight superb saves, four in each half.
Woodings' goal brings his season total to nine, which continues to lead both the Cardinals and the entire Landmark Conference. He has now scored five goals in his last three appearances and six goals in Landmark contests, which is also on top of the conference. Kelly's assist was his second of the season, making him the third player on the squad with multiple assists this year.
Jagha,
Owen Allegro,
Maxim Pencak,
Liam Giblin,
Maximilian Penczar and
Charlie Paparella each played the full 90 minutes in the draw.
The Cardinals return to the pitch on Saturday, October 19 as they head up to Williamsport, Pa. to take on Lycoming. The match with the Warriors is slated to start at 3:30 pm.
