WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's basketball team defeated Elizabethtown on its home floor to extend its program-record winning streak to 20 games on Wednesday night.
The game was tight throughout before No. 8 Catholic opened up a bit of a lead by riding an 18-10 run into the halftime break. The run was ignited by high-level three-point shooting when the Cardinals converted from deep on three-straight possessions. Carly Mulvaney cashed a three before an Anna Scoblick offensive rebound led to a Keegan Douglas three. Douglas then hit another long-range shot to open up a seven-point lead and force a timeout from the Elizabethtown coaching staff.
The two threes were part of a 21-point effort from Douglas, who added one more to go a perfect 3-for-3 from deep. She went 8-for-10 from the field with two rebounds and two assists.
The Cardinals came out of the locker room strong to extend the lead, winning the third quarter 23-15 to push the advantage to 16. The lead grew to as many as 21 early in the final stanza before Elizabethtown's final push brought them as close as 10.
Kaleigh Beirne produced her best game in a Catholic uniform to date, delivering a career-high 19 points off the bench. The senior was effective in all facets of the game, shooting 7-of-13 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line while grabbing four rebounds, dishing out two assists and blocking one shot.Â
Douglas' 21-point outing marked her sixth game of the season with 20 points or more and her third in her last five contests. The Loyola Maryland transfer shot a season-best 80 percent from the field and responded in resounding fashion to just a three-point performance when the Cardinals defeated the Blue Jays in overtime earlier this season.
Scoblick, the current two-time defending Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, continued on her recent tear, dropping 18 points with eight rebounds and seven assists. The sophomore has now scored 17 or more points in four straight and has been in double figures in seven games in a row. The seven helpers matched a career high.
Sarah White was the fourth Cardinal in double figures with 12 while starters Kerry Flaherty and Mulvaney finished with nine each.
As a team, Catholic shot 9-of-16 from three-point range, its best performance from deep this season (56.3%). This was also the sixth time this season that Matt Donohue's team has registered more than 20 assists (21).
The results marks the first time that Catholic has done the double over Elizabethtown and beat them in both regular-season match-ups since the 2019-20 season. The Cardinals now move to 13-0 atop the conference standings with just five games remaining ahead of a massive tilt with No. 13 Scranton on Saturday. Tip-off against the Royals is set for 3:30 p.m.
