Volleyball Drops Two on Final Day of Worthington Classic

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic volleyball's five-game winning streak came to a halt on Saturday as the Cardinals dropped a pair of contests to Marymount and DeSales on day two of the Worthington Classic. The Cardinals drop to 10-4 on the season.

GAME 1 - Catholic 1, Marymount 3 (23-25, 25-22, 20-25, 20-25)

Catholic got a strong offensive performance, hitting .233 as a team, but the Cardinals fell in four sets to the Saints on Saturday afternoon. Olivia Blondin hit .278 and totaled 15 kills for Catholic and middles Erin Faughnan and Grace Guerin put down 13 kills on just 19 swings combined. Marymount hit .297 for the match, getting an otherworldly performance from Kaitlyn Doyle who had 24 kills and hit .400 for the match.

Marymount roared out to a 9-5 lead in the first set before Catholic punched back, taking a 13-12 lead. Marymount used a 10-5 run to jump back ahead 22-18. Blondin had a pair of kills and Halie Murphy added one as Catholic cut the deficit to 24-23, but Maya Harris finished the job for Marymount to take a 1-0 lead.

The second set went Catholic's way, as Heather Stout's team took a 25-22 set win. Tied 7-7, Catholic went on a 6-1 run, getting two kills and an ace from Faughnan as the Cardinals jumped ahead 13-8. Moments later, Murphy put down another kill to push Catholic's lead to 18-11. The Saints got backing within three on multiple occasions, but kills from Blondin and Vivian O'Brien and a duo block from Blondin and Guerin put Catholic ahead 24-19. The Cardinals held off a late Marymount push to close out the set with another Blondin kill.

Catholic led 8-2 in the third set, getting help from all over as Blondin, Murphy, and Tanya Sichling recorded kills. After Blondin and Sichling went back-to-back to put Catholic up 14-8, Marymount went on a 13-3 run, taking a 21-18 lead. The Saints ended the set on a 17-6 spurt.

The Cardinals kept it close in the fourth set, narrowing the deficit to 14-13 and 20-18, but the Saints led the whole way in a 25-20 victory to take the match in four sets.

GAME 2 - Catholic 1, DeSales 3 (26-24, 21-25, 22-25, 13-25)

The Cardinals took the first set in a tight 26-24 effort before dropping the final three sets in Saturday's four-set loss. Catholic hit .208 in the match, but DeSales hit .258 and held the edge in aces and blocks as well.

Similar to the first match, Blondin and the middles were strong with the senior captain recording a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs. Guerin and Faughnan combined for 21 kills while Guerin hit .611 for the match. Sheppard had 38 assists and six digs while Gaby Hernandez-Ferraiuoli logged 27 digs.

Holding a 12-11 lead, the Cards ripped off five straight points to hold a 17-11 lead in the first set after a pair of Hernandez-Ferraiuoli aces. Catholic led it 24-19 before DeSales swung back to tie the set. However, Faughnan logged the final two kills to give Catholic the set win.

The second and third sets were tight before DeSales closed out the match with a strong fourth set. Catholic led 18-15 in the second before an 8-0 run pushed DeSales on top, tying the match at 1-1.

In the third set, Catholic tied the match at 16 after a Sheppard service ace, but DeSales pulled out a 25-22 win.

Blondin's streak of matches with 10 or more kills continues as she logged 28 kills on the day to cross over 600 kills for her career. Dating back to the final match last season, Blondin has 10 or more kills in 15 straight games. Blondin was named to the Worthington Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Cardinals head to St. Mary's City on Tuesday evening for a non-conference matchup.
