Gregorio, Hudock Score to Lift Cardinals Over Seahawks

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — A pair of second-half goals lifted Catholic women's soccer to a non-conference win on Wednesday night.

Catholic was dominant throughout but it took the Cardinals some time to break down St. Mary's (Md.).

Casey Sommers' side outshot their opponents 11-1 in the first half with outside back Lauren Cerda firing three shots on target in the opening stanza. But the Cardinals struggled to find a way past Kylie Wells and the Seahawks' defense that hung in well.

It was a brilliant ball from Teighan Boyle that finally carved open the backline of the Seahawks. The center back picked out Ava Gregorio on a driven through ball and the sophomore made no mistake, sprinting through to finish into the far corner with her left foot.

Catholic doubled its advantage late on when AJ Hudock netted her first collegiate goal. After a turnover in midfield, Victoria Pou Varona played a good ball out right to Mattigan DiBease. Just moments after checking into the match, DiBease squared a brilliant ball across the six-yard area and Hudock finished first-time to seal the victory for Catholic.

Boyle was active throughout the contest, registering five shots to match Cerda. Ava Rieger made two saves to earn her first clean sheet of the season in her second start.

With the win, Catholic sits at 4-2-1 on the season and has now surpassed its win total for the entirety of the 2022 season in just seven matches.

The Cardinals will look to build on the victory as they enter conference play. The Greyhounds of Moravian will come to Carlini Field on Saturday for the Landmark Conference opener. Kickoff on Senior Day is slated for 3:30 p.m.
