Richmond, Va. — Three different Cardinals scored as Catholic ended its stay in Richmond with a 3-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Playing at City Stadium, Catholic squared off with Hampden-Sydney after falling to No. 25 Emory, 3-1, on Friday night.
Despite neither team creating any clear-cut chances in the opening stages, Catholic broke the deadlock with its first shot on target in the 15th minute.
Positive play down the right flank by Gordie Bernlohr pushed the Cardinals forward as the senior found Domenico Caltabiano on the edge of the penalty area. The crafty junior took one touch onto his right foot and curled a stunning strike past the helpless Tiger goalkeeper.
Catholic continued to attack the Tigers but had to settle for a 1-0 lead at halftime. Despite outshooting the Tigers 9-1 in the opening stanza, the Cardinals scored with their only shot on target.
Travis Beauchamp's side came out of the locker room intent on extending its lead, pushing hard for the second after the interval. It took just eight minutes for the goal to come as Kwaku Marfo-Sarbeng made no mistake after Bernlohr dispossessed a Tiger in the defensive third and fed the forward for a simple finish.
Catholic killed the game in the 76th minute when usually defensive-minded Mudi Jagha offered some brilliant attacking play in the Hampden-Sydney penalty area. The junior used his strength to hold the ball up after receiving it with his back to goal. He then picked out a streaking Connor Bailey, who finished calmly with his right foot.
The goals for Caltabiano and Bailey mark their firsts of the campaign. Bernlohr now leads the team with two assists and sits even with Marfo-Sarbeng atop the scoring charts with two goals. Eight different Cardinals have now found the net this season.
Twenty-nine players featured in the match for Catholic as James Pickeral saw his first action of the season in between the posts in relief of Owen Allegro as the two combined for a clean sheet.
The Cardinals will remain on the road as they prepare for a midweek match at Gettysburg. Kickoff on Wednesday, Sept. 20 is set for 4 p.m.
