GETTYSBURG, Pa. — In a midweek trip north, Catholic fell to Gettysburg on Wednesday afternoon, 2-0.
Despite the Cardinals stringing together strong stints of attacking pressure throughout the first half, it was the Bullets that got on the board first, scoring in the 32nd minute.
Aidan Muller found Michael Sack on the left flank who beat a defender to his inside and fired a powerful strike past Owen Allegro's dive. Sack had gone close to scoring just a minute earlier as well.
Catholic went close before the break as substitute Hayden Lim had two opportunities to level.
The first was created by Michael Hanlon as the senior jumped on a moment of miscommunication by two Bullet defenders just to the left of the penalty area. He was first to react and got to the byline, crossing within the six-yard area, just ahead of an outstretched Gordie Bernlohr. The ball reached Lim at the back post but his effort was blocked by some last-ditch Bullet defending.
On the ensuing corner, the ball came to Lim on the top of the penalty area and the midfielder fired a powerful strike toward Kevin Muhic's goal, but the shot was accidentally blocked by his own teammate, Bernlohr.
The Bullets doubled their lead just four minutes into the second half when Catholic was undone by direct play from Gettysburg. Defender Nur Adhikarie smashed a ball forward from the top of his own penalty area and Chase Sempervive chased it down, arriving just ahead of two Catholic defenders. The forward produced a deft touch over the on-rushing Allegro to give Gettysburg some breathing room.
Catholic's best chance of the game came in the 73rd minute when Ryan Kelly played a devastating ball into the box. Working on the right flank, he cut inside onto his right foot and delivered a ball destined for Bernlohr's head. The service was just too tall for the leaping Bernlohr, but even with no touch was curling into the far corner, if not for a sprawling save by Muhic.
The Cardinals went close again in the 78th minute when Jacob Rocha picked out Kwaku Marfo-Sarbeng with a great cross from the right side, but forward's header sailed just wide of the left upright.
Joe DeAngelis had one final chance for Catholic with three minutes remaining, but the freshman could not beat Muhir to a contested ball in the penalty area.
Travis Beauchamp's men will now gear up for conference play, beginning on Saturday when Moravian comes to Carlini Field. Kickoff in the Landmark opener is set for 1 p.m.
