Parker, Rojack Strike as No. 22 Catholic Opens Conference Play with Win

Washington, D.C. — Goals from Mary Parker and Mary Rojack lifted Catholic to a victory in its Landmark Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless opening quarter, Parker broke the deadlock for No. 22 Catholic just over three minutes into the second stanza. Good work by Niki Micciche and Caroline Evans down the right flank forced Juniata to concede a penalty corner. Kellie Caputo then pushed the chance to Parker atop the arch and the senior fired a low drive across the turf, past two on-rushing defenders and a helpless goalkeeper.

Juniata was able to peg Catholic back just three minutes later when Sierra Rossman fired home following a scramble in front of Abigail Kearney's goal.

The Cardinals responded, pushing back ahead just three minutes after the equalizer when Rojack made good on a penalty stroke. Strong play close to the cage from MaryKate Ardizzi and Lauren Keast earned the stroke, and for the second time this season, Rojack made no mistake, finishing powerfully to the goalkeeper's right.

Despite Catholic's dominance, Rachel Palumbo's squad failed to score again and had to settle for the 2-1 victory. Thus, both of Rojack's successful penalty strokes this season have gone down game-winners.

Catholic outshot the Eagles 26-4 as Juniata scored with its only shot on target. Catholic also accumulated 16 penalty corners to just three for the visitors. Juniata goalkeeper Brittney McMullen made an impressive 13 saves.

It was a big day for freshman Mickey Bond as the midfielder made her first appearance of her career, getting the start for coach Palumbo.

Catholic will now turn its attention to its third nationally-ranked opponent of the young season. The 4-1 Cardinals will travel south to face No. 11 Christopher Newport on Wednesday evening, with opening touch set for 6 p.m.
