Washington, D.C. — The Catholic University women's soccer team moved to 3-1-1 with a dominant performance against local side Marymount (Va.) on Wednesday evening.
Head coach Casey Sommers' side put together a comprehensive display and were in control throughout the entirety of the match.
The Cardinals started their attacking barrage from the opening whistle, firing three shots toward Layne Kaufman's goal in the opening four minutes. Victoria Pou Varona looked energized in her first-career start and was closest to opening the scoring when she unleashed a powerful strike that was only kept out by top woodwork in the 17th minute. The freshman registered a game-high four shots.
It was another freshman, Angelina Serrano, who made an immediate impact after entering the match in the 28th minute. Just 90 seconds after being subbed on, she played a brilliantly-weighted through ball to Jordan Siok rushing in off the left wing. The senior then showed her pace and her skill, rounding the goalkeeper with ease and finishing into an empty net to push Catholic ahead.
It was the same story in the 42nd minute when two substitutes combined to double the Cardinal advantage. This time it was Isabel Doherty who picked a perfect through ball to set free Faith Sawyer, who, coming in from the left flank, calmly slotted past Kaufman for 2-0. Serrano was involved again, having made a brilliant standing tackle in midfield to win possession back for her side.
Doherty was top class all night, winning balls in the midfield and looking dangerous going forward. Her prowess earned her another assist in the 68th minute when she won a header directly from a goal kick. Her powerful nod forward was chased down by Ava Gregorio, who beat her defender to the ball and calmly finished substitute goalkeeper Hannah Mockenhaupt for her first tally of the 2023 campaign.
Doherty was close to getting on the scoresheet herself in the 77th but saw a brilliant solo run come to an end as Mockenhaupt closed the angle well and saved at close range.
Other stand-out performers included center back pairing Abby McCall and Alex Berish. Both were handed their first start of the season and both played well, with Berish especially impressive in her reading of the game and ability to cut out passes. The start was the first of her Catholic career.
Goalkeeper Madelyn Catania earned her first-career win and her second-career clean sheet in as many starts.
Siok's goal marks her fourth of the campaign, pulling her level with Peyton Coron for team's scoring lead. When the Cardinals last met the Saints in 2021, Siok bagged a brace in that victory.
The win marks Catholic's 10th in a row over the Marymount. The Cardinals will look to continue their moment this weekend as they remain at Carlini Field, hosting Salisbury at 1p.m. on Saturday.
