EAST FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The Catholic University women's soccer got off to the perfect start on Friday evening as it dispatched Farmingdale State, 2-0.
Sophomore Peyton Coron was at the double for the Cardinals, striking twice in the second half to down the Rams.
Catholic were the superior side all evening, beginning from the opening whistle. Casey Sommers' team came out flying, firing five shots toward the Rams goal in the opening 10 minutes, putting two on target. Ava Gregorio, who registered a game-high five total shots, tested the opposing goalkeeper just 82 seconds into the contest before Jordan Siok also forced a save out of Gabby Pinero in the third minute.
Despite outshooting the Rams in the opening stanza there was nothing to separate the two sides until after halftime. Catholic came out of the locker room with the same type of energy they did to begin the game, this time finding the breakthrough just three minutes into the second half.
Emily Longenderfer made a great read on an attempted Rams pass, making the interception before feeding Coron who finished from outside the penalty area past goalkeeper Kelsie Feingold, who came on at halftime. The assist marks the first of Longenderfer's career.
It was a similar story in the 80th minute when Coron secured her brace, however, this time it was Siok provide the helper.
Teighan Boyle and Lauren Cerda played the full 90 minutes in defense as goalkeeper Maeve Graham secured her second-career shutout with three second-half saves.
Six different Cardinals fired a shot on target while newcomers Alex Berish, Amanda Behre, Kathryn Scully and Victoria Pou Varona all made their Catholic debuts off the bench.
Tonight's victory marked the first time since 2019 that Catholic won its first game of the season. The Cardinals will now look to build on this result as they welcome Alvernia to Carlini Field for their 2023 home opener on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
