Enzo Sechi was impressive in his return to floor for Catholic, scoring 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds as the Cardinals earned an 89-47 victory over previously unbeaten Wilkes. Catholic improved to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in Landmark Conference play, winning its first two conference games by a combined 86 points.
Sechi was instrumental early on as Catholic built a 22-2 advantage in the first 7:05 of the contest. The veteran forward scored 12 of the team's first 22 points, hitting a pair of three-pointers to push the early lead to 20. The Cardinal lead reached 25 points with 5:24 left in the first half as
Jesse Hafemeister scored on back-to-back possessions to make it 34-9. The lead stretched to 30 for the first time at the 1:29 mark of the first half as
Sean Neylon connected from distance to give Catholic a 42-12 lead. Hafemeister knocked down a three with 19 seconds left in the half, sending Catholic to the locker room with a 45-14 edge.
Catholic opened the second half on a 12-2 run, taking a 41-point lead as
Tommy Kelly scored with 16:21 left. Wilkes trimmed it down to 33 with just over 12 minutes to play, but Catholic responded with a 12-0 run to grow the lead to 45.
Jake Melady scored 10 straight points in less than two minutes of game action before Kelly forced a Wilkes timeout with a dunk in transition with 8:35 to play.
Catholic led by at least 38 points for the rest of the contest, growing the lead to 47 at its peak with a
Jack Fitzpatrick layup after
Cephas Wilson-Bahun came away with a steal for Catholic. 12 different players scored for
Aaron Kelly's team with eight players scoring at least five points in the winning effort.
Joining Sechi in double digits was Hafemeister, who scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to move into 37th all-time on Catholic's all-time scoring list, Kelly (13), and Melady (10).
Brian Herbert and Neylon each grabbed seven rebounds and scored five points while Kelly handed out six of the team's 14 assists.
Catholic made 11 threes on the afternoon, the fourth time this season in which the Cardinals have knocked down 11 or more threes. The Cardinals average just over 9.5 made threes per game. 54 rebounds was a season-high for Catholic as was 17 offensive boards. Catholic turned it over just five times, a season low and the third time this season with less than 10 turnovers.
The Cardinals will hit the road for back-to-back Landmark contests, traveling to Susquehanna on Wednesday night before a trip to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Moravian next Saturday.
