WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University volleyball team went 1-1 in their final tri-match of the season while celebrating four seniors prior to the match against Ferrum.
GAME 1 - Catholic 2, Salisbury 3 (33-31, 17-25, 25-18, 21-25, 13-15)
The entire match was a back-and-forth battle between the Cardinals and the Sea Gulls, ending in a nail-biter fifth set.
The first set saw both teams make incredible plays at match point to send the scoreboard well past 25 points. Catholic held the lead 24-21 before Salisbury tallied four points in a row to keep the set alive. Kills by
Olivia Blondin and
Tanya Schling secured the opening set, but Salisbury picked up the next one to tie it up. The last three sets were even before the Sea Gulls pulled away with it.
Catholic had nineteen aces in the match to Salisbury's seven.
Gaby Hernandez-Ferraiuoli serve was on point as she led the way with a career-high seven aces.
Isabel Gonzalez-Alvarez was also a big contributor from the service line, drilling down four aces of her own.
Blondin led the way with 21 kills and 17 digs for a double-double.
Sydney Sheppard also put up a double-double with 47 assists and 13 digs.
Four Cardinals had over 15 digs. Blondin and Sheppard were joined by Hernandez-Ferraiuoli with 29 and Golzalez-Alvarez with 16.
GAME 2 - Catholic 3, Ferrum 0 (25-23, 25-18, 26-24)
Catholic was in sync and well-connected as a unit to sweep its second match of the day. The Panthers put together a rally late in the third set, but Catholic won three-straight points to close it out.
Aileen McPartland closed the game for the Cardinals from the service line. At 24-23 match points down, McPartland entered the match to serve and rallied off three-straight points to secure the straight-set victory.
Grace Guiren got the final kill of the match for the Cardinals, marking her tenth of the contest. This is the fourth time this season that Guiren has recorded ten or more kills.
Hernandez-Herraiuoli recorded 25 digs this time and Gonzalez-Alverez was also in double-digits again with 11.
Blondin recorded another double-double with 18 kills and 13 digs.
Today's matches wrapped up the regular season for the Cardinals. Catholic host Susquehanna in the first round of the Landmark Conference Tournament on Tuesday, November 7 at 7 p.m.
