Cards Fall to Scranton in Landmark Conference Championship

SCRANTON, Pa. — The Catholic University women's soccer team fell to Scranton in the Landmark Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon. It just wasn't the Cardinals' day as Casey Sommers' team went behind early and could not recover.

Catholic gave away a free kick on the right flank in the sixth minute which was always a precarious proposition with Mary Haggerty's ability to put in a dangerous service. Haggerty powered the free kick to the back post where Niamh Healy arrived in a crowded penalty area to head home.

The conference's leading goalscorer doubled Scraton's advantage in the 29th minute when she made a near-post run to get on the end of Claire Mulholland's low ball. Healy's brace means she has now scored a staggering 19 goals this season.

Catholic made its best effort to regroup and go again following halftime. The Cardinals started the second stanza the more aggressive of the two sides as Peyton Coron fired a shot within the first three minutes and Catholic earned an early corner kick. The Cardinals could not muster anything of note when it came to meaningful scoring chances, however, and Scranton sealed the victory with a third goal through Emily Bannon in the 75th minute.

Coron was the most lively Cardinal going forward, firing four shots toward the Scranton goal. Jordan Siok was only able to attempt one shot while playing the full 90 minutes.

Ava Rieger did her best to keep her team in the match, making five saves on the afternoon. Sam Cesario and Lauren Cerda joined Siok in playing the entire match.

Despite the loss, Catholic posted 12 victories this season, an incredible four times as many as last year, and hosted a Landmark Conference Tournament match for the first time in eight years. Siok has scored 15 times this season while also providing three assists.
