WASHINGTON, D.C. — After a huge 1-0 overtime win over Drew on Thursday night, the Catholic University women's soccer team is headed to the Landmark Conference Championship for the first time since 2015.
Including the semifinal match, four out of Catholic's last five Landmark Conference Tournament matches had gone beyond 90 minutes and the Cardinals had struggled in those situations, losing all of the previous four. But an clutch strike from
Isabel Doherty sent the Cardinals into euphoria, breaking that streak and lifting her side into the final. The iconic victory marked the first postseason home win on Carlini Field and is the program's first postseason win in extra time in over a decade.
Two-time All-Landmark Conference forward
Jordan Siok is the attacking leader for the Cardinals, having registered 18 total goal contributions on the season, including an all-important assist to Doherty on the game-winning semifinal strike. Siok has scored 11 goals in her last eight matches, only failing to either score or assist once in that eight-game stretch. The shifty forward has scored 15 times during the regular season, the joint-most in the conference with Scranton's Niamh Healy. Scranton's star forward scored a brace in the 5-1 semifinal dismantling of Elizabethtown, pushing her season total to 17.
As a team, Catholic has more than doubled its goal output from last season. In addition to Siok,
Peyton Coron has netted seven goals while
Ava Gregorio has found the back of the net four times. Six players have provided multiple assists with Siok, Coron and Gregorio joined on that list by Doherty,
Lauren Cerda and
Katarina Bauer.
Healy is the primary goal scorer for the Royals but their offense is far from one-dimensional. The Scranton pair of Emily Bannon and Mary Haggerty have combined to provide 17 assists as Bannon's nine are the joint-most in the Landmark Conference. Catholic have first-hand knowledge of Bannon's ability as it was her lone strike in overtime that downed the Cardinals in the Landmark Conference Semifinal last season
Catholic's strong defense is led by the center back pairing of
Sam Cesario and
Teighan Boyle while
Payton Hardy is a key figure at the base of the midfield.
Cesario is one of three players to start every match this year for coach Sommers and has played the most minutes of any Cardinal. The sophomore registered an assist on Siok's first goal of the contest against Drew and was named Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the week just two days later. Boyle and Cerda are also mainstays in the backline that has kept a staggering 12 clean sheets in 19 total matches. Cerda is a danger going forward on the left flank and provides great ability to whip in a dangerous service on dead balls as well. The right back position has seen a bit more rotation, but
Emily Harkins has established herself as the first choice in that regard as the season has progressed.
Kaylee Murphy, Liv Enderle and Sam Lowe lead Scranton's backline that has kept eight clean sheet this season. The Royals only conceded two goals in eight Landmark matches aside from leaking three in their only conference loss of the season to Drew.
In the goalkeeping department,
Ava Rieger has recovered from an early-season injury to start the last 14 matches. She leads the conference in multiple major categories including goals against average (.563), save percentage (.822) and shutout (9). She holds the record for most saves in a Landmark Conference Tournament game after making 15 stops in the semifinal loss to Scranton last season.
Scranton's Nicole Olson is the only other goalkeeper in the conference to average less than a goal-per-game against (.846) and is the closest to Rieger in the clean sheet department (7). Also also saves four-fifths of the shots she faces, sitting third in the conference with a .800 save percentage.
Catholic enters the match on a nine-game unbeaten run that includes eight victories and just one draw. The Cardinals have now quadrupled their win total from last season, boasting an overall record of 12-4-3 and have not lost a match since September, but it was the Royals that handed Catholic its last loss, triumphing 3-1 in Scranton. Catholic got on the board first in that one thanks to a 14th minute goal by Doherty and were able to protect that lead for a while, but second-half goals from Healy, Linda Daly and Samantha Goffice ultimately pushed the Royals to victory.
Catholic enters the match with the goal of exercising some demons, having lost its last eight matches against Scranton. The most recent victory for the Cardinals came in 2015 which also marks the last time that the Cardinals hoisted the Landmark Conference trophy.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. with an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
