WASHINGTON, D.C. - 17th-ranked Catholic (4-1) used a late-game 13-0 run to pull away with a 66-59 victory over Marymount (3-3) on Tuesday night. The Cardinals trailed by as many as 11, but outscored Marymount by 10 in the second half en route to the non-conference victory.
The Cardinals trailed 42-31 with 16:23 remaining in the second half before a quick 7-0 run brought Catholic back within four.
Brian Herbert drained a three off a feed from
Jesse Hafemeister to start the run. A Montell Cooper free throw ended the seven-point swing with 13:51 on the clock, but Herbert connected once more from distance, making it a two-point game with 12:51 to play. Herbert finished a layup off a nice dish from
Jake Melady to tie the game at 43-43, but the Saints pulled back ahead, leading it 54-49 after a Wyatt Hockenberry triple with 6:42 to play.
With 5:14 remaining, Hafemeister scored off a
Sean Neylon assist to bring Catholic within one possession. 37 seconds later it was
Tommy Kelly who tied the game with a three-pointer from the top of the key. Catholic took the lead for good with 3:40 to play as Hafemeister finished close to the basket off a
Dan Buckley assist. Buckley hit a three with 2:57 left to put Catholic up five.
Hafemeister and Kelly combined to make seven free throws down the stretch to ice away the Saints as Catholic picked up the non-conference victory.
Tuesday's contest featured eight lead changes and five ties with each team leading by at least nine points. Catholic's biggest lead came just over five minutes into the game as Neylon knocked down a three to give Catholic a 14-5 lead. After a back-and-forth first half, Marymount took a 30-27 lead into the break after a Marcus Stubbs three.
Hafemeister paced Catholic with a season-high 20 points, moving him into 41st on Catholic's all-time scoring list with 1,062 points. Kelly added 13 points while Herbert scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds. Buckley and Neylon each stuffed the stat sheet as Buckley contributed eight points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two blocks while Neylon added seven points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Stubbs was the game's leading scorer with 21 points and five rebounds while Hockenberry chipped in 10 points for Marymount. Each team knocked down seven three with Catholic taking 21 while the Saints took 24.
Catholic will break from game action over the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to Franny Murray Court to open up Landmark Conference play on Wednesday, November 29 versus Elizabethtown.
