Cardinals Earn Comfortable Sweep in Non-Conference Tri-Match

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Hosting a non-conference tri-match on Saturday, Catholic earned a pair of victories to improve to 14-6 on the season.

MATCH 1 - Catholic 3, Dickinson 0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-20)

The Cardinals defense was dominant, holding the Red Devils to a hitting percentage of .008 in the match. Catholic logged 11 blocks and dug up 64 balls in the match while the offense hit .224 led by 17 kills from Olivia Blondin. Blondin logged a double-double with 12 digs as well while Grace Guerin had six kills and four solo blocks for the Cardinals.

Despite a mid-set run, Catholic got off to a 1-0 start with a 25-16 victory. Blondin recorded four kills in a span of five points as Catholic built a 9-4 lead. Dickinson fought back to narrow the gap to 14-12 with Amelia Kim providing three straight points, but Catholic outscored the Red Devils 11-4 the rest of the way. A pair of Blondin kills sandwiched a Sydney Sheppard ace to close out the set.

Catholic scored the first six points of the second set and led 8-1 as Blondin continued to roll and Erin Faughnan got in the mix. Once again the Red Devils made a run, this time bringing it to 12-11, but Heather Stout's team responded with a 6-2 run as Halie Murphy logged three of her 10 kills to push Catholic ahead 16-12 before Blondin made it 18-13. The Cardinals took the final three points as Tanya Sichling and Murphy recorded kills before a Blondin ace put Catholic up 2-0.

It looked like Dickinson could force a fourth set as they took a 16-12 lead, but Catholic scored 10 straight to quell any fears. Faughnan recorded three aces during the run while Murphy and Guerin combined for five points. Sichling and Blondin logged kills to close it out for Catholic.

MATCH 2 - Catholic 3, New Jersey City 0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-9)

Catholic cruised to a victory in the second match, never allowing more than 17 points in a set to close out a 2-0 day. Blondin added 12 more kills to give her 29 for the day and go over 250 for the season while Murphy reached 10 kills for the second straight match.

The Cardinals were dominant in the set, siding out 11 times in 12 tries and leading the entire way. Catholic led 5-0 immediately with Sheppard recording an ace and Guerin adding two quick kills. The Cardinals used a 3-0 run to takde a 16-7 lead on a kill from Murphy. The Cardinals took seven of the final nine points to pick up a 13-point set win. Gaby Hernandez-Ferraiuoli logged 10 digs in the opening frame.

The Gothic Knights put forth a competitive second set, tying the set at 9-9 and 10-10. However, Stout's team used a 9-2 run to break it open, getting four kills from Blondin during the run and taking a 19-12 lead on an ace from Hernandez-Ferraiuoli. Faughnan closed out the set with an ace.

Catholic used an 8-0 run in the third set to jump ahead 13-6 before finishing off a 25-9 dominant set victory to close out the match.

16 different players saw the floor for Catholic in the win. Emma Monico (3), Vivian O'Brien (3), and Sydney Hanley (1) each recorded kills. Claudia Morales handed out 12 assists while Isabel Gonzalez-Alvarez had three assists, two digs, and an ace for Catholic. Kate Berra, Aileen McPartland, Brynne Burgess, and Molly Farrell each recorded aces in the match as Catholic set a season-high with 12.
