Catholic's Unbeaten Streak Reaches Six With 3-0 Victory at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Catholic women's soccer continued its hot run, winning its third straight contest and extending its unbeaten streak to six games with a 3-0 victory at Wilkes on Saturday. Three different players scored goals for the Cardinals as they improved to 9-4-3 on the season and 5-1-2 in the Landmark Conference.

Just under 20 minutes into the contest, Casey Sommers' team struck gold, putting the first goal of the match on the board as Sam Cesario sent a free kick from long range into the box, angling towards the back post. The ball took a hop over Wilkes keeper Hannah Landis' head and into the net for a Cardinal goal directly off the free kick. It marked the first career goal for the sophomore New Jersey native two weeks after she recorded her first career assist in a win over Drew. The kick was set up as Jordan Siok drew a foul call on the far side of the pitch while tracking back as Wilkes tried to clear the ball out of its defensive end.

Catholic added some insurance early in the second half as Siok found the back of the net for the fifth straight game. Emily Harkins started the chance for Catholic down the far wing, sending a cross in. Peyton Coron made a near post run for it, but the ball bounded past both the Catholic striker and a Colonel defender and into a perfect spot near the back post where Siok deposited it into an open net.

With her goal today, Siok now has 13 goals on the season and nine in the last five games. Her 13 goals are second-most in the Landmark Conference this season and she is the first Catholic player to score 13 or more goals in a season since Lindsay Aleman's 17-goal campaign in 2016.

Coron joined the scoring efforts in the 71st minute, taking advantage of a defensive miscue from the Colonels to tack another one on to Catholic's advantage. Lauren Cerda played a ball into the box from the left flank. It was mishandled in the center of the box and Hardy took possession inside the box, settled it, and fired with the left foot to beat the keeper for her seventh goal of the season.

The Catholic defense was stout as sophomore keeper Ava Rieger faced just four shots on target, saving them all. Rieger's first save came in the 54th minute as a looping ball was sent into the box for an easy stop. Her second save came in the 57th minute as Erin Edwards clipped a ball in from the right edge of the box right into the waiting hands of Rieger. Rieger made two more comfortable saves late in the contest to preserve the clean sheet

Catholic will hit the road for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at Mary Washington before closing out the Landmark regular season on Saturday at Juniata.
