BALTIMORE, Md. — The Catholic University field hockey team picked up its 10th win of the season in a dominant 4-0 victory over Goucher on Wednesday night. The Cardinals have now gone five straight games and 21 quarters without allowing a goal.
Catholic controlled possession for a majority of the first half but neither team was able to find the back of the cage in the opening 30 minutes. That changed quickly as Catholic found the target four times in the middle six minutes of the third quarter.Â
Rookies for Catholic broke the deadlock and scored the first two goals of the game. Defender
Lauren Keast maneuvered around a group of defenders with nifty stick skills and fired a long shot from outside the arch to the back right corner. She has now recorded goals in back-to-back games.
Mickey Bond followed it up two minutes later with her second goal in three games. Catholic ran solid penalty corner actions throughout the contest but this attempt saw a the ball swing around the arc and shot across the front of the cage. Bond was stationed at the back post and able to finish on a deflection off a Gopher.
The third goal came from a common goal scorer for Catholic in
Niki Micciche, who continues to show off her stellar stick stills. Again off a penalty corner set, Micciche was fed the ball from Keast down low and collected the ball in front with her back to the cage. A quick flip of her stick produced a back hand shot to the open side of the cage. She now has eight goals on the season and 27 in her career.Â
The final goal came
Ashley Martin who was able to center herself in front of the cage and slide one past the goalkeeper. She was helped by fellow classmate
Caroline Evans who gave a perfect feed right to the stick. This marks Martin's second goal of the season and Evans' first assist.Â
The Cardinals filled the stat sheet with 26 total shots, 20 shots on goal, and 14 penalty corners. In comparison, the Gophers only managed to get three shots off despite earning seven penalty corners. Goucher didn't record a shot on goal in the contest.
Catholic will return home for Senior Day on Saturday, October 21. They will face Wilkes, a new Landmark Conference opponent, starting at 12 p.m.Â
