WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's tennis team downed St. Mary's (Md.) in a home match on Sunday afternoon.
Catholic was led by four players who all won both of their matches.
Paige Brightwell and Meaghan Laniewski flew to victory at No. 3 doubles, defeating their challenges at love while Mairead O'Hara and Ava Niggemeier pulled out a big win at No. 2 doubles. The pair was down 3-4 before rattling off five straight games to give Catholic a lead heading into the singles play.
O'Hara and Niggemeier were dominant at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, dropping just one and two games apiece.
At No. 3 singles, Laniewski and her opponent split the first six games of the match before the freshman found a new gear to win nine straight games, finishing her match out in convincing style. Brightwell held off a late comeback push for her challenger at the No. 4 position, winning 6-2, 6-4.
The result sees Nate Farlow's team flip the script from last season as the Cardinals fell to St. Mary's in 2022.
Catholic will now turn its attention to a busy week. The Cardinals will host Harford Community College on Tuesday before welcoming Stevenson on Wednesday.
