Resilient Cardinals Earn Comeback Victory At McDaniel

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. - After falling behind 20-3 in the first half of Saturday afternoon's tilt, a resilient Catholic University team roared back with 34 unanswered points, propelling the Cardinals to a 37-27 victory at McDaniel.

Junior signal-caller Madden Lowe completed 12-of-14 second-half passes for 132 yards, including an early third-quarter touchdown to sophomore John Maynes, the first of four consecutive second-half touchdowns for the Cardinals. Catholic took advantage of a McDaniel special teams miscue with 10:19 to play in the third. Junior Connor Gill booted a punt away to Wesley Nchinda, but Nchinda fumbled it away and sophomore Malachi Hansen recovered the fumble to give the Cardinals possession on the McDaniel 31-yard line. Two minutes later, Lowe found a wide-open Maynes in the end zone to cut the deficit to 20-17.

The Cardinals took the lead for good less than three minutes later as junior Kevin Licciardi ran in his first of two touchdowns to put Catholic on top 23-20. After a slow start on the ground, Licciardi and junior Jared Colletti combined to average 4.6 yards per rush in the second half, tallying 92 yards on 20 chances. A deep ball from Lowe to the Cardinals' top-returning receiver, senior Preston Jeffrey, set up Catholic with first-and-goal inside the five before Licciardi plunged his way in. Jeffrey found his way into the end zone earlier in the contest, pulling in an 18-yard touchdown late in the first half to make it a 20-10 contest.

Colletti found the end zone from nine yards out just 40 seconds into the fourth quarter, pushing the Catholic lead to 10. Colletti's rushing touchdown ended an eight-play 75-yard drive that took just under four minutes as Catholic made it 27 unanswered points in the contest.

Later in the quarter, the Cardinals took advantage of a chance to ice away the game. Catholic took over possession at the McDaniel 32 with 5:35 to play in the contest. Five plays later, Licciardi plowed into the end zone for the second time to extend the lead to 37-20, continuing the run of 34 straight points scored by the Cardinals.

McDaniel raced out to a 13-0 lead in the contest, holding Catholic scoreless for the first 15:11 of the contest. William Looney made field goals of 43 and 29 yards for the Green Terror while Trent Gaskins was the beneficiary of the McDaniel strip sack that led to his two-yard touchdown run with just over five minutes to play in the first period. Gaskins found the end zone three total times, scoring at the end of a 14-play 73-yard drive to give McDaniel its biggest lead at 20-3, and then again to cut the deficit to 37-27 on a one-yard touchdown with 2:18 remaining.

Lowe finished the contest 21-of-26, passing for 237 yards and a pair of touchdowns. 126 of Lowe's 237 yards were received by Jeffrey as he caught eight passes to lead the Cardinals. Colletti finished the contest with 91 yards on the ground, averaging over seven yards per carry.

Defensively, Michael Hopkins led the way with 10 tackles and a pair of tackles for loss. Huey Bodger added five tackles and the Cardinals' lone sack of the contest. Luke Brautigan recorded an interception for Catholic.

Catholic will return to action on Saturday, September 10 when they host Randolph-Macon at 1 p.m. inside Cardinal Stadium.
