Box Score CARLISLE, Pa. — Niki Micciche played hero as the Catholic University Field Hockey team knocked off Dickinson in overtime to claim a big road victory in Carlisle.
Catholic started the game as the brighter team, outshooting the Red Devils 5-1 in the first half. Only one of those shots, however, was on cage as either team could only produce the singular shot on goal in what was a cagey first 30 minutes.
The game opened up a bit in the second half, when Dickinson responded well and outshot the Cardinals, 6-2. Freshman Abigail Kearney, who earned her second clean sheet and win in as many games, registered both of her saves in the fourth quarter.
Micciche was able to win the contest for the Cardinals after just over three minutes of overtime, when she was quickest to react to a scrum in front of the cage. She produced a clever finish, using a reserve chip to beat the Dickinson goalkeeper and claim the important victory for Catholic.
The Cardinal defense was strong throughout the afternoon. Freshman Mary Rojack, senior Gracie Burford and junior Caroline Evans set the tone in the back while Emma Shallow and others performed well off of the bench. Catholic was able to successfully repel six Red Devil penalty corners in the match.
Micciche and midfielder Molly McEvoy both registered three shots on the day, as Micciche grabbed her second goal of the season.
In just four matches, the Cardinals have experienced overtime twice already, this time coming out on top in the extra stanza after falling to No. 15 TCNJ in overtime on the opening day of the season.
Catholic will now turn its attention to a midweek matchup against Washington College. The Cardinals will welcome the Shorewomen to Cardinal Stadium on Wednesday evening for a 6 p.m. start.
