Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — The Catholic University baseball team picked up its third win of the season on Wednesday, 12-6, powered by great pitching from a pair of freshman and a late onslaught from the Cardinals' offense.
St. Mary's (2-1) struck first, as Dan Weeden tripled in the bottom of the first to drive in a run and give the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead. The run would prove to be their only score until the bottom of the ninth as the Cardinals (3-4) locked down in the field, committing only one error.
Both teams battled defensively, as freshman Cody Bosak got the start on the mound and pitched four complete innings, allowing just one hit and recording eight strikeouts. Fellow freshman Lucky Perrotto stepped in for relief, ultimately recording the win after striking out four and allowing no runs in four innings.
After graduate student Tighe Watson reached home on a Seahawks' error in the top of the sixth inning, the Cardinals' offense exploded in the seventh and eighth innings.
With the bases loaded, Watson was walked, sending junior Zach Burton home. After another error by St. Mary's allowed two more Cardinals to score, senior Peter Giombetti broke the inning open with a two-run double, capping off the five-run seventh.
Catholic picked up right where they left off the inning before. To start the scoring in the eighth, freshman Dante Pozzi recorded an RBI single to send senior Tyler Shaffer home. Then, senior Ben Nardi singled and Conor Casey doubled to plate a combined three runs. Senior Tommy Antonucci then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Giombetti.
Freshman Tommy DiGiorgio concluded the Cardinals' scoring, reaching home plate on a wild pitch for to extend the lead to 12-1 at the time.
The Seahawks put together a late offensive rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring five runs, to cut into the lead. However, senior Skylar McLean shut the door on the mound, getting the final out to secure the win for Catholic.
The Cardinals kick off their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Sunday, March 6, when they take on Rochester. First pitch is set for 9 a.m.
