Cardinals Continue Win Streak Against Penn State Harrisburg

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic baseball team hosted Penn St. Harrisburg for a Saturday showdown. The Cardinals came away with a 7-1 win against the Lions to improve their win streak to seven games.

Roman Tozzi earned the start on the bump, forcing two quick outs. The Lions put their only run on the board today thanks to an early solo shot from Blaine Waltimyer over the left field wall. Tozzi and the Cardinals closed out the inning with a groundout. Harrisburg kept the Cardinals off the board in the bottom of the first, collecting a ground out and a pair of lineouts.

Catholic found a way to push runs across in the bottom of the second by capitalizing on Harrisburg's mistakes. After a pair of errors and a hit by pitch, the Cardinals found themselves with runners on first and third. Gabriel Ruiz grounded out to the shortstop, but he was able to cash in an RBI, scoring Matthew Fisher. With two outs, Michael Napolitano sent a ball out to right field. The Lions' right fielder made an error, tipping the ball off of his glove, which gave Lance Eilbacher an opportunity to plate another Cardinal run.

The Cardinals added another two to the scoreboard in the third, credited to a Sammy Burman two run bomb to left field. After three complete, the Cardinals led 4-1.

In the top of the fourth, Charlie Belli took to the mound for the Cardinals. Waltimyer singled to start the inning, giving the Lions a base runner. Harrisburg's Alexander Ruiz flew out to Gabriel Ruiz in left field to give Belli his first out of the day. The Catholic defense helped its pitcher out, converting a double play to close the half.

After going scoreless in the fourth and fifth, the Cardinals found their groove in the sixth. Chase Falcon started the rally with a single to right field. Eilbacher sent his teammate scoring with a double down the right field line. Elibacher made his way to third, collecting a stolen base in the process. Napolitano poked a ball out to right field to give Catholic its fifth run of the day, despite getting thrown out at second. Jack Bateman continued the offensive surge with a single up the middle. Chris Esquivel followed it up with an RBI double through the right side. After their run in the sixth, the Cardinals moved to a 7-1 lead.

Luke Cardman entered the game to pitch the final three innings for the Cardinals. The junior shutdown the Lions, not allowing any runs in the final three innings. Catholic also went scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings, but their lead held true, giving way to a 7-1 win.

Catholic has now won seven games in a row during their late season stretch, all of which have been played at Robert J. Talbot Field.
