Siahpoosh Scores as Cardinals Fall to Mary Washington

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University men's soccer team fell to Mary Washington, 3-1, on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals outshot the Eagles but were only able to beat Griffin Hemmendinger once in the Mary Washington goal.

Catholic were the far better side in the first half, peppering the Eagle backline. The Cardinals took 12 shots in the opening 45 minutes but could not find the breakthrough and entered the break scoreless.

Senior Darius Siahpoosh gave Catholic the lead in the 63rd minute, when he found the back of the net for his team-leading ninth tally of the season. He got on the end of a brilliant cross, and after Hemmendinger saved the initial effort, Siahpoosh bundled it over the line to push the Cardinals ahead.

Senior goalkeeper Austin Coron made a huge save moments later, standing his ground on a breakaway to thwart Josh Kirkland and keep Catholic's 1-0 lead intact.

Kirkland wouldn't be denied, however, and found the net just five minutes later, nodding home in the 73rd minute after a brilliant cross from the right.

The Eagles continued to apply pressure before finding the decisive goal 10 minutes from fulltime. Carter Berg latched on to a ball in the penalty area and coolly slotted it away to put Mary Washington ahead for good. Berg added the Eagles' third in the final minute of the contest as Catholic pushed numbers forward in an attempt to find the equalizer.

The Cardinals will now turn their attention back to Landmark Conference play. They will welcome Juniata to Carlini Field on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
