Catholic Knocked Off by Moravian in Landmark Semifinal

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The third-seeded Catholic men's soccer team hit the road on Wednesday for the semifinal of the Landmark Conference tournament to take on the second seed Moravian. The Greyhounds found a goal in the first half and prevented the Cardinals from getting on the board during the rest of the match to close out a 1-0 defeat for Catholic.

The Greyhounds broke through for the lone goal of the match in the 19th minute after winning a corner on the right side of the 18-yard box. Moravian played the corner short to Guiseppe Propato who found space between two defenders and ripped a shot into the top left corner of the goal to make it a 1-0 advantage.

Catholic still outshot Moravian in the opening 45 minutes but were unable to put a chance in the net and the score went into halftime with the Greyhounds holding a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals had their best chance to tie the game up in the 56th minute after a free kick was delivered into the box by Christian Backich. The ball was played into the front of goal and Mateo Muñoz was able to send a header towards the top of the goal, but it was saved. Off the ensuing corner kick, Ellington Andrews also got a shot on target but once again Joey Varano came up with a save to keep the lead intact for Moravian.

The Cardinals were able to create a couple more scoring chances throughout the period, but none resulted in an equalizer and the Greyhounds closed out a 1-0 victory to advance to the conference championship.

Catholic's season comes to a close with a 12-3-4 record and they are now 17-8-4 all-time in the Landmark Conference tournament.

Trevor Grice played the full 90 minutes in goal, making one save. Andrews, Backich, Aidan Brindle and Charlie Paparella all all played the full 90 minutes in the match.
