Siahpoosh Scores Brace as Cardinals Hand Rangers First Loss of Season

Box Score

MADISON, N.J. — Senior Darius Siahpoosh scored a brace as the Catholic University men's soccer team handed Drew its first loss of the season.

It didn't take the Cardinals long to find the breakthrough as Jack McEvoy was clinical, finishing Catholic's first clearcut opportunity of the match. An Owen Maher flick-on from a Domenic Caltabiano corner in the seventh minute found its way to McEvoy, who made no mistake.

Siahpoosh, Catholic's leading scorer on the season, then got involved, netting his seventh and eighth goals of the season in just his 10th match.

In the 14th minute, the senior combined brilliantly with Ryan Kelly. After picking up the ball on the left, he found Kelly in the center of the penalty area and continued his run, before Kelly produced a cleverly-disguised pass to find Siahpoosh for an easy tap-in at the back post.

After taking a 2-0 lead into the break, Siahpoosh found the net again just three minutes into the second half. Freshman Ben Zimmer produced a brilliant deep cross from the right that found Siahpoosh streaking through the penalty area unmarked. He finished with a simple header from the center of the six-yard area.

Caltabiano got in on the act in the 55th minute. Michael Hanlon sliced the Ranger defense open with a clinical through ball and Caltabiano made no mistake, finishing calmly into the bottom corner to score in his second-straight match.

Drew scored its loan goal of the match with 10 minutes remaining when they headed in from a set piece.

With Siahpoosh's two goals on the day, he has now scored 26 times in his Catholic career.

With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 6-1-3 on the season and 2-0 in the Landmark Conference. They will now turn their attention to a midweek fixture against Mary Washington. The Eagles will travel to Carlini Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Wednesday evening.
