Defending Champs Open Season With 2-1 Win Over Maryville

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University men's soccer team opened its season on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Maryville (Tenn.) at Carlini Field in the Turk Emekli Classic.

Junior Troy Young made three saves in his third career start as the Cardinals (1-0) outshot the Scots, 17-7, including 11-5 in the opening half.

Sophomore Gordie Bernlohr scored his first career goal on a penalty kick in the 40th minute before sophomore Ryan Bradby added his first career tally just five minutes later at 44:44 to give Catholic a two-goal lead at halftime.

The defending Landmark Conference champions maintained the pressure in the second, taking six more shots and holding a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks before Maryville (1-1) finally broke through in the 75th minute to avoid the shutout.

With the win, Catholic extended its regular-season, home unbeaten streak to 10 games dating back to a 2-0 victory over Lycoming on Aug. 31, 2019 in the Turk Emekli Classic.

The Cardinals conclude the fourth annual Turk Emekli Classic on Sunday when they host local rival Marymount (Va.) beginning at 3 p.m.
