WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Catholic University field hockey team fell in the team's home opener to No. 9 Rowan on Saturday at Cardinal Stadium, 5-1.

After a scoreless half in which senior Maysen Elliott totaled two saves, Rowan scored just one minute into the second quarter off a penalty stroke by Kristina Castagnola.

About a minute later, the Profs (2-0) converted off a penalty corner and a shot by Krystyna Hovell pushed the lead to two. Hovell scored her second of the night halfway through the third quarter off a rebound.

However, the Cardinals (0-2) did not back down as senior Katie Cusumano scored for the second-straight game when she converted a rebound off of a pentalty corner just three and a half minutes into the third quarter. She has already doubled her career total in just two games this season. 

Elliott recorded four saves in the third quarter to keep the Profs scoreless. She finished with a career-high eight saves. Meanwhile, junior Gracie Burford recorded two defensive saves.

Rowan added two more goals in the fourth quarter, including another penalty stroke with four minutes remaining.

Catholic hosts Randolph-Macon on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at Cardinal Stadium. Pass back is set for 6:00 p.m.
