Bernlohr, Young Lead Men's Soccer to 1-1 Draw at Eastern

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University sophomore Gordie Bernlohr scored the game-tying goal in the 62nd minute as the Cardinals rallied to force a 1-1 tie against Eastern Wednesday at Olson Field.

Catholic (5-2-1) is unbeaten in its last two meetings against the Eagles who like the Cardinals, advanced to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship in 2019. That year, Catholic posted a 3-2 win at Carlini Field on October 1.

Bernlohr has two goals and one assist in the team's last three games as the Cardinals are 2-0-1. Catholic is now 3-0-1 when Bernlohr scores a goal and 4-0-1 when he records a point.

Both teams had quality chances to score in the early going as an Eastern goal in the 16th minute was disallowed due to offsides. Bernlohr then ripped a blast from the top of the box off a cross from Bailey in the 28th minute that was blocked to keep the game scoreless.

The Eagles (6-1-2) finally broke through in the 37th minute when Jesse Byler scored his first goal of the year on a header off a cross into the goal box by Arjun Sharin on a corner kick.

Eastern held a slim 7-6 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes while the Cardinals held a 3-2 margin in corner kicks.

Despite taking just four second-half shots, Catholic managed to even the score at 1-1 when Bernlohr and Bailey connected again, this time resulting in Bernlohr's fourth goal of the season.

The reigning Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Bernlohr extended his point streak to three games and now has four goals and 10 points this year, ranking him second on the team in both categories behind senior Darius Siahpoosh.

The Cardinals took six shots in the overtime periods, but couldn't get the game-winner thanks to five saves from Diesel Fiore. He finished the game with six after making one stop in the first half.

In his third start of the season, junior Troy Young made a career-high four saves to run his record to 1-1-1 this season and 3-1-1 for his career.

Catholic is 1-0-1 in overtime games this season and is unbeaten in its last seven extra time contests (5-0-2) dating back to 3-2 win over Gettysburg at home on Oct. 24, 2017.

The Cardinals continue their three-game road trip on Saturday when they head to Elizabethtown. The two teams have met in the conference championship game each of the last two seasons with each team winning once.
