Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University football junior Kevin Licciardi totaled 128 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cardinals to a 32-29 victory over Endicott Saturday at Cardinal Stadium.
The Cardinals (2-1) won their fourth game out of the last six overall and third-straight at home dating back to the 2019 season.
Licciardi totaled 58 yards rushing and one touchdown on 12 carries while hauling in five catches for 70 yards and another score. He had 84 of Catholic's 120 yards of total offense in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 24-yard run and a 50-yard pass from sophomore Madden Lowe as Catholic rallied from a 22-18 deficit to take a 32-22 lead with 2:19 remaining in the game.
After holding the Gulls (2-1) to a three-and-out midway through the fourth quarter, the Cardinals started a drive at their own 45-yard line with 7:16 to play. Facing a fourth-and-10 at the Endicott 45, Lowe connected with senior Preston Jeffrey across the middle for 21 yards to keep the drive alive before Licciardi raced 24 yards on the next play to put Catholic back in front, 25-22 with 5:03 left.
Saturday's game featured six lead changes with Catholic converting on 4-of-6 fourth-down opportunities, including on two of its five scoring drives.
On the ensuing drive, the Gulls drove into Cardinal territory, but the Catholic defense held them to no gain on fourth-and-3 from the 45 to give the ball back to the offense with just over three minutes remaining.
In an effort to run out the clock, the Cardinals faced third-and-5 from midfield when Lowe lofted a pass to Licciardi that was tipped by Endicott defensive lineman Sam Opont. However, the ball deflected to Licciardi who secured his fifth reception of the day and went 50 yards untouched up the right sideline for the score to give Catholic its largest lead, 32-22 with 2:19 left.
It took the Gulls just two plays and 29 seconds to go 41 yards as John Kenney scored on a 2-yard run to make it a one possession game.
The Cardinals' fourth drive of the fourth quarter ended at the Endicott 21-yard line, setting up the defense to secure the win for Catholic in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
After driving 32 yards in six plays, senior Ryan Keating forced Joe Leonard's pass to fall incomplete on the game's final play as the Cardinals improved to 2-0 at home for the first time 2017 when they opened with wins over Utica and Randolph-Macon.
Lowe completed 29-of-45 passes for 354 yards and three touchdowns, including six to Jeffrey who posted his first career 100-yard receiving performance with 100 yards. Freshman Malachi Hansen had 164 all-purpose yards with 111 yards on four kickoff returns.
After missing the first two games of the season due to injury, junior Noah Miller made his season debut with eight total tackles, including six solo, while junior Gage Hurlbut had seven tackles, one interception and one pass breakup. Senior Liam Dearing also had seven tackles with one for loss and one pass breakup.
Catholic looks for its first four-game win streak at home since Oct. 11, 2008 when it faces another first time opponent in Christopher Newport next Saturday, Sept. 25. Kickoff from Cardinal Stadium is at 1:30 p.m.
